Know the ABCDEs of Melanoma

Melanoma is one of the most serious forms of skin cancer, but early detection can make a significant difference. When checking your skin, watch for the ABCDEs of melanoma:

  • A — Asymmetry: One half of the mole or spot does not match the other.
  • B — Border: The edges are irregular, uneven, or blurred.
  • C — Color: Multiple colors or uneven coloring are present.
  • D — Diameter: The spot is larger than 6 millimeters (about the size of a pencil eraser).
  • E — Evolving: The mole or lesion changes in size, shape, color, or appearance over time.

If you notice any new, changing, or unusual spots on your skin, schedule an evaluation with a dermatology provider.

Future Skin Cancer Awareness Month events and community screening opportunities will be announced as details become available.

Can I still get a skin cancer screening?

Yes. While Melanoma Monday is an annual awareness event, Apex Skin provides skin cancer screenings and spot checks throughout the year at locations across Northeast Ohio.

What is the difference between a SPOTcheck and a full-body skin cancer screening?

SPOTcheck appointment focuses on one or a few specific spots of concern, such as a changing mole or new lesion. A full-body skin cancer screening is a comprehensive exam of the skin from head to toe to evaluate for potential signs of skin cancer.

What are the warning signs of melanoma?

Warning signs of melanoma may include:
  • A mole that changes in size, shape, or color
  • Irregular borders
  • Multiple colors within one spot
  • Itching, bleeding, or non-healing lesions
  • A spot that looks different from others on your skin
If you notice any concerning changes, schedule an evaluation with a dermatology provider.
