Melanoma is one of the most serious forms of skin cancer, but early detection can make a significant difference. When checking your skin, watch for the ABCDEs of melanoma:

  • A — Asymmetry: One half of the mole or spot does not match the other.
  • B — Border: The edges are irregular, uneven, or blurred.
  • C — Color: Multiple colors or uneven coloring are present.
  • D — Diameter: The spot is larger than 6 millimeters (about the size of a pencil eraser).
  • E — Evolving: The mole or lesion changes in size, shape, color, or appearance over time.
