The Bridal Glow-Up: A Real Timeline for Wedding Skin Prep

When Tessa Fraicola, FNP, started thinking about her wedding skin prep, she had one clear advantage over most brides: as a nurse practitioner specializing in aesthetic medicine at Apex Skin, she knew exactly what she wanted to do and why. But even with that expertise, her biggest takeaway wasn’t about which treatments to book. It was about consistency.

“I saw the biggest impact by doing something very consistently for at least three months, rather than adding different products every two weeks,” she says. “That would throw my skin off. Instead, I was consistent with a simple routine.”

Here’s exactly what she did—for herself and her now-husband—and how to build a timeline that works for your own wedding day.

Tessa’s Pre-Wedding Skincare Routine

Tessa is combination oily-dry and acne-prone, so her routine was built around keeping her skin clean, clear, and hydrated without overdoing it.

She double cleansed every night, starting with the ZO Gentle Cleanser to remove makeup and sunscreen, followed by either a second round of the same cleanser or an exfoliating cleanser two to three times a week to clear out dead skin. From there, she used retinol for brightening and skin renewal, a hyaluronic acid serum to plump and hydrate, an under-eye cream, and a moisturizer.

  1. Gentle cleanser
  2. Exfoliating cleanser
  3. Hyaluronic Acid serum
  4. Retinol
  5. Under-eye cream
  6. Moisturizer

Her focus was on products that would photograph well: hydrating, firming, and brightening. She started solidifying this routine about three months before her engagement, knowing that consistency over time was going to make more of a difference than layering on new products.

The Pre-Wedding Treatments

Microneedling

Microneedling was Tessa’s most consistent treatment throughout the entire process. With acne scarring she wanted to address before the wedding, she scheduled sessions every four to six weeks for the three months leading up to the engagement, then kept that cadence going until about two to three months before the wedding so her skin had plenty of time to heal and build collagen.

“My skin had all that time to bank up collagen and help heal all my scars, and improve my pigmentation,” she says.

Results weren’t overnight. Within two weeks of her first session, she noticed more glow and slightly tighter skin. But the moment that really hit came at the three-month mark.

“I just woke up and I was glowing one day. My acne scars were a little bit more smoothed out. My makeup was going on better. That’s when I had that ‘this is working’ moment.”

PRP for Under-Eyes

Under-eye appearance was something Tessa felt self-conscious about, so she added PRP injections to her plan. Platelet-rich plasma is drawn from your own blood, spun down to isolate the growth factors, and injected under the eyes to stimulate collagen and improve dark circles and crepey texture.

She did four sessions over four months after getting engaged, one per month. By the end, the results spoke for themselves. “I felt like I didn’t have to wear concealer,” she says. “That was my goal: not to have to cake on a bunch of concealer.”

There was a brief period of puffiness after the first session that caught her off guard, but results started showing about a month in, and the dark circles continued improving with each treatment.

Filler and Lip Filler

Tessa had filler before wedding festivities, but her provider Isabelle—who had gotten married herself the year before and served as Tessa’s blueprint throughout the process—recommended a touch-up about four months before the wedding. That timing gave everything time to settle before the big day.

Isabelle also suggested lip filler, something Tessa had never done before. “She talked me into doing a little bit of lip filler just so that everything looked perfect with my smile before the big day.”

Botox/Dysport

About one month before the wedding, Tessa did Dysport to smooth fine lines. She recommends doing injectables at least four weeks out from any major event so there’s time for a touch-up at the two-week mark if needed.

Tessa’s Timeline at a Glance

The order matters as much as the timing. Here’s how she sequenced everything:

  • Start with skincare: a consistent routine is the foundation, and it takes the longest to show results. Get this settled first.
  • Add procedures next: meet with your provider to discuss your goals and determine what is best for you: microneedling, PRP, lasers, etc. These need time to build collagen and show results, so the earlier the better.
  • Filler at three to four months out: timing fillers appropriately gives you time to love the results and let any swelling or bruising fully resolve before the wedding.
  • Botox or Dysport one month out: for the final touch, one month leaves you with enough buffer for a touch-up if needed.

Wedding Skin Preparation for the Groom

Starting with a Skincare Routine

Tessa’s now-husband came into the engagement with a basic skincare routine: Neutrogena cleanser once a day. By the wedding, was getting microneedling, IPL laser treatments, and had a full morning and night skincare routine.

The starting point was simple: she put him on the ZO Gentle Cleanser daily and the exfoliating cleanser three times a week, added a retinol for skin renewal and past acne scarring, an under-eye cream for crepey texture, and the SkinMedica Water Burst moisturizer.

Skincare Treatments for the Groom

First Tessa introduced microneedling. Her fiance had been on and off with it before the engagement, but once they were engaged, he got consistent with monthly sessions for six months, a break, then two to three more sessions in the months before the wedding.

IPL laser was added to address sunspots and freckles. He was hesitant at first, especially about the word “laser,” but the results won him over quickly. “I showed him the before and after photos throughout the process and once he started seeing results that’s when it really clicked. Now he’s bougie and always wants something.”

His biggest concern with lasers was the pain. Numbing cream made microneedling completely manageable to the point where he nearly fell asleep during one session. For the IPL, they skipped numbing since it can cause extra redness that the laser then targets, but he handled it without any complaints.

For brides trying to convince a reluctant or hesitant partner, Tessa’s advice is to start small. “Get them on a consistent skincare routine. They’re probably stealing your skincare anyway. Starting them on a routine that can be laid out and easy for them to grab morning and night—that’s the biggest win at first. And then getting them into the procedures is a lot easier once they know what it means to invest in their skin.”

Advice for Brides on Wedding Skin Prep

No matter how much time you have, Tessa’s advice stays consistent: start simple, be patient, and don’t let TikTok talk you into adding 50 products at once.

“I never like to add more than one product every 30 days,” she says. “If you’re going to have a reaction, sometimes it takes a couple weeks before you’re seeing that. You have to give it time to see results.”

If you have a full year, you have the luxury of doing it all in the right order. If you only have a few months, skincare and microneedling can still make a real difference. Botox and filler offer more immediate results and can be done closer to wedding day.

Tessa had a patient who got filler just one month before her wedding and looked stunning on the day. “You would’ve thought we were doing something for a year, but it was only a couple months.”

And if you’re a bride, guest, or member of the wedding party with just a week or two before the celebration? A DiamondGlow facial is Tessa’s go-to recommendation. “Your skin will be glowy. It helps exfoliate, get off all that dead skin, and clears out all the pores. That’s something quick and easy that you can do to make your skin change fast.”

Wedding Day Skin Results

Tessa’s photographer doesn’t retouch skin. So when Tessa says she zoomed into her wedding photos to inspect every detail, she means it.

“I’m obsessed with my pictures,” she says. “My skin looks so good in them. I definitely saw what it was worth to go through all of that.”

That’s the whole point of wedding skin prep: not perfection, but walking into your wedding day feeling like the best, most confident version of yourself. With the right plan and enough consistency, that’s absolutely achievable with Apex.

With several years of specialized experience in aesthetic medicine, Tessa has developed expertise in facial balancing using dermal fillers and biostimulators, as well as in comprehensive skincare services, with a particular focus on acne treatment and skin barrier restoration. Her practice philosophy centers on holistic health approaches, and she has a growing interest in medical weight loss management.
